Seas & Straws

Seas & Straws addresses the problem of plastic in the oceans and its impact on all creatures along the food chain, from the smallest plankton to humans. Every year, 300 million tons of plastic are produced. 50 percent of this is thrown away after single use, and contrary to popular belief, the majority is not recycled. A staggering 91 percent of all plastic items produced end up in the environment in one way or another. Most goes to landfills, some is incinerated, but more than 8 million tons end up in the oceans each year.

Already, there is 6 times more plastic in the oceans than plankton. More than 1 million birds and countless marine animals are strangled or suffocated each year, starve to death because plastic debris clogs their stomachs, or are poisoned by a variety of toxic chemicals. These chemical toxins, along with microscopic plastic pieces, accumulate in the fish along the food chain and eventually end up on our plates.

Seas & Straws aims to raise awareness of this environmental and health crisis and encourage a rethink. The goal is to inform about the plastic problem, recommend and offer plastic-free alternatives, and support and promote hotels and businesses that want to become plastic-free.

We use our Rotary Clubs inner active 4-7-8-17 banner to help us rate and display each of our club projects. The “Boxes” lighten for each “Box” that the project qualifies for. All projects must pass “THE FOUR WAY TEST”  and at least one “Area of Focus” and one  United Nations, 17 Sustainable Development Goals
